A Level Further Maths
Further Mathematics is a qualification which both broadens and deepens the mathematics covered in A Level Mathematics. It is designed to be learnt alongside A Level Mathematics over a two-year course. Students taking Further Mathematics overwhelmingly find it an enjoyable, rewarding, stimulating and empowering experience. For someone who enjoys mathematics, the course provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and/or more sophisticated mathematical concepts. It also enables students to distinguish themselves as able mathematicians in applying to university and, later, in the employment market.
Topics studied in the course include:
Pure mathematics: Proof, Complex numbers, Further Series, Advanced Roots of Polynomials, Volumes of Revolution, Matrices, Linear Transformations, Further vectors, Further algebra, Further calculus, Methods in calculus, Polar coordinates, Hyperbolic Functions, Further Differential equations and modelling.
Mechanics: Work, energy and power, Impulse and momentum, Elastic Strings and Springs, Elastic collisions in 1-D & 2-D.
Decision: Algorithms, Graphs and Networks, Graphical Algorithms, Route Inspection, The travelling salesman problem, linear programming, the simplex algorithm, critical path analysis.
Further Maths shows a high level of mathematical skill and problem-solving capabilities. Careers that benefit from this higher order thinking would include many in technology, computers, mechanical, scientific, research, engineering of all kinds. Economic and environmental planning and modelling would benefit from specific modules covered across the maths courses. STEM specific careers would be more accessible with Further maths as an additional A-Level.
